Firestopping

Commercial and Multifamily Firestopping

With every commercial or multifamily building project you undertake, your goal is to build a safe, long-standing structure that future owners, residents, and employees will use and enjoy for many years to come. Many builders throughout the region also look for commercial firestopping in New Jersey expertise to help ensure long-term life safety and property protection in these projects.

One of the most important pieces of guaranteeing the long-term safety of your building project is firestopping. Firestopping helps seal gaps and openings in fire-rated assemblies, preventing fire, smoke, and toxic gases from spreading through the building. Effective firestop systems support proper compartmentalization in commercial buildings, extend evacuation time during a fire, and are essential for firestopping for apartment buildings, condominiums, and townhouses, as well as high-rise and mixed-use developments.

Code-Compliant Firestopping Solutions

Local building codes throughout the region require appropriate firestopping in newly constructed commercial and multifamily buildings, including strict New Jersey building and fire codes. Many builders also rely on UL-tested and listed firestop systems, FM-approved products, and joint firestopping systems to maintain fire-resistance ratings in commercial structures.

At Hudson Insulation, we take care of your firestopping needs. Your building project is in good hands with our top-notch, safety-first team, known as New Jersey regional firestopping experts and a trusted professional firestopping contractor in NJ. We support firestopping for new construction projects, office buildings, hotels, stairwells, shafts, curtain wall joints, and more.

Firestopping Methods

We use a variety of Metacaulk firestopping materials to protect your commercial or multifamily building from the spread of fire. Metacaulk products, manufactured by RectorSeal, are designed to comply with building codes and work to block flames, smoke, heat, and even water for up to four hours in fire-rated construction joints and through-penetrations. These materials include intumescent firestop sealants and caulks that activate under extreme heat to form a protective barrier. Hudson Insulation also supports the design and installation of firestop systems, including through-penetration firestop solutions, concrete and drywall firestop details, and firestopping for plumbing, electrical, and HVAC penetrations.

Pipe Collar - Hudson Insulation

Pipe Collars

  • Used around combustible pipes that pass through fire-rated wall and floors.
  • They expand when exposed to high heat and seal the opening to prevent fire and smoke from traveling through.
  • Installed around the base of the pipe at floor or wall openings.
  • Common in multifamily and commercial buildings where plumbing systems penetrate fire barriers, including use in firestopping for office buildings, hotels, and mixed-use developments.
Putty Pad - Hudson Insulation

Putty Pads

  • Used for sealing electrical boxes, outlets, and other small penetrations in fire-rated walls.
  • After application, the putty material remains soft and expands under heat to fill gaps and prevent fire spread.
  • Applied directly to the back and sides of electrical boxes or other small openings.
  • Common where fire-rated walls have multiple electrical and data box holes.
Firestopping - fire caulk

Fire Caulk

  • Seals gaps around openings created by cables, conduits, pipes, and HVAC ductwork to keep fire-rated structures strong and effective.
  • The caulk works by hardening into a fire-resistant barrier that expands when exposed to high heat.
  • It’s applied with a caulk gun or trowel around small openings. It is frequently used in firestop solutions for stairwells, shafts, and curtain wall joints as part of a fully integrated fire-resistance strategy.
